"One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by." -- Jeanette Wallis
Strong Middle School has the following Summer Reading requirement for ALL students for Summer 2018:
All students are free to read whatever books they find of interest!! When school resumes in September, you will give a brief book talk about one of your favorite reads in your Language Arts classes.
While you are indeed free to read whatever you find of interest, keep these suggestions in mind:
Select titles appropriate to your own reading level. Consult this Types of Fiction and Non-Fiction: An Overview document to better understand the variety of choices you have!
Aim to read DAILY, but set realistic goals: Don't aim to read pages, read minutes. For example, if you set aside twenty minutes of time for reading over the goal of fifty pages a day, you'll find you not only enjoy it more, but also you'll actually read more pages.
Challenge yourself: read chapter books at or OVER the 100-page length.
Challenge yourself: try reading both non-fiction and fiction titles.
Seek advice from the experts: Durham Public Library, Levi E. Coe Library, and bookstores, such as Barnes and Noble and RJ Julia's in Middletown, will have scores of suggestions--it's what they do! You can also check out Amazon to see what is trending this summer in the Middle School age range.
Try some TED TALKS!
Ted Talks by brilliant kids under 20!
Sci-Fi and Fantasy Reads to inspire Teen creativity
Try an Audiobook!

Participate in the DPL/Coe Summer Reading program: doing so will not only expose you to great reads, BUT ALSO you ARE eligible for all the awards and raffle prizes associated with it! Win-win. (click here)
